1/3 of the US adult population does not get enough sleep, which has serious consequences for every one of them.

Doctors recommend people get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night, but many people believe they can get by without it. After all, there are only so many hours in a day to work or for other activities.

Elon Musk personally acknowledged how his long work hours were beginning to take a toll on his health, which was called “a horribly inefficient way of using human energy,” by Arianna Huffington.

While Musk doesn’t believe there is an alternative, sleep experts have definitively found “the shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.”

Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep, and kids more. Sleep needs vary person to person, but at least 7 hours is the rough minimum for the majority of the population.

Even for those who need less sleep per night, a lack of sleep with cause problems for your health.

There are about 30 consequences of not getting enough sleep:

Linked to be at higher risk for cancers
Skin heals at a slower rate, leading to aging
Lower inhibitions when controlling impulses, leads to unhealthy behavior
People feel lonelier
Makes it difficult to learn in the short term
Can damage Long term memory
Signs of Alzheimers in the brain
Higher risk of heart disease
Leads to irritability
Sleep deprivation can lead to hallucinations
Slowed reaction time
Increases clumsiness
Harms immune system
Drains sex drive
Raises risk for type two diabetes
Bad decision risk raises
Raises ease of distraction
Driving tired can impair judgement
Overproduction of urine
Harms muscle recovery
Pain is more severe
Intestinal issues can arise
Increased risk of headaches
Increased inflammation
Disrupts genetic activity
Increases risk of death
